The cleaning job I posted about yesterday they asked me for references and I thought they meant to contact them if they offer me the job. What I didn't realise is that they were contacting them straight away so they said they've contacted my current employment who I haven't told as they haven't offered me the job. What do I say if they ask about the email?

That happened to me once. Hugely embarrassing. I'd been for an informal look around the school with the head - who was a social acquaintance - and was invited for interview, but on reflection I decided not to attend for interview and notified the school concerned. The Head had already written to the school I was employed at and my current Head was most stiff and...

Just be honest: "Yes, I'm thinking of moving to another job but I've not been offered one yet. I didn't realise that Bloggs & Co would already be asking for references".

Awkward. Just say you were thinking of looking for a job with more prospects and more money. Who knows, they might beg you to stay and make you a manager?
Courtesy says you should ask someone before giving them as a referee. , In a large organisation it isn't always your line manager who will do it.

Complete honesty was the only policy and things settled down. But a lot of unnecessary hurt/anxiety had been caused.

Was going give me a trial when I've had my references I'm having anxiety now.
I was once offered a job, which I accepted, then when they got references they withdrew the offer.
You've discussed this kind of situation before and I can't be the only one who doesn't get your current working pattern. How can you have the time to go for a trial in a new job when you still work full time for McDs?

Some companies will not give references as there could be comebacks if a bad reference is given.

21.00 I worked for a big electricity co about 14yrs ago( yes I know it's irelevant).
The guy i was teaching was a big noise, yet he had to lie when giving references, it was the norm he said.
I don't think bad references are allowed any more. I wonder how many businesses/companies adhere to those rules.

I suspect that McDonald's are used to employees looking for other work. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't bring it up. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't say anything to your manager/boss, just that they may not approach you about it.

You've had good advice, be honest with your boss/manager.
