I wouldnt have a clue. Who comes up with this rubbish? I bet someone is earning a fortune peddling this nonsense to companies and managers along with their latest mission statements. Passionate driver indeed! Is this a bit of slap and tickle in the back seat.

Well said, Casa. Absolute garbage. Pack your bags, Jack, and head for the door, never mind trying for a step up in an organisation that peddles this piffle.

My background is in the media. I wrote this in answer to an earlier question. It's a true, short interview for a reporter's job conducted by a pal of mine:

My pal: "Hello, Tony. Take a seat. Now Tony, are you any (expletive) good?"

Tony: "I'm (expletive) better than you, you (expletive)."

My pal: "When can you start?"

Tony: "Monday."

End of interview. My pal knew all he wanted to know. Nothing would put this guy off getting the story.

Suggest this approach to your bosses and HR types if you decide to go for the interview. Oh, and if they are spelling the word "competancy" tell 'em they can't spell. It should be "competency." You won't get the job but you will have made a point.

Thanks for your replies guys,i don't think i will go for the job.

Hi,

Competency based interviews are about what you have done.

Where I work we do them. In order to be sucessful you have to basicall tell a story about each of the competencies they are interviewing on. Have two or three examples ready and write the key points on a postcard so that you can jog your memory.

Ask yourself the following;

What, when, how, why, outcome.

Usually they are lookin for you to provide evidence of what you have done. ie: Tell me about a time when you gave excellent Customer service?

The answer should have e beginning, middle and end. Remember also they want to know about you!!! So when replying it would sound something like ' I was workin on the desk when a customer complained-----------. I asked Customer, I listened, I actioned etc.

Hope this helps. Do not be put off and they usually score your answers and if you do not get the job, get the feedback so that you can develop yourself via secondments or an action plan with your manager. It's a case of eliminatination until you get there.

Good luck.

wendieb is quite correct about how these interviews are conducted, on a side note, you may find that if they interupt you or ask the question is a slightly different way then you have not given them the answer they are looking for.

I sympathise as I really hate these types of interviews. It took me a long time to understand exactly how they worked and it was only as an interviewer on competency based interviews later on could I tell.

One last thing, if you are giving examples then make sure they are true...especially if its for the same company as they can easily check with your existing manager.
