Bored!!!

I've been in IT for 12 years and I am bored (and soon to be 40!). I want to do something interesting, like becoming a locksmith. Has anyone here done a mid-life career change, if so did it work out?

Pros: Every day different, My own boss, no targets but my own.
Negatives : Far less security, much more stress related to ensuring the monthly bills are met.
Overall though, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, at least to my mind.

Funnily enough I had a locksmith to the house a couple of weeks ago because my lock had broken and he was about your age and was just learning and was going on a course that weekend to continue learning all about locks and things. So you could do that. How about being one of the new HIPS inspectors ????

Just an afterthought .. my friend was in IT and decided to become a 'modern day plumber' .. he put an ad in Yellow Pages and now he just does about two calls a day sorting out people's computer problems or doing some IT work in small companies that cannot afford their own in house IT staff. He can do whatever hours he likes or take a day off or whatever and he makes a good living !
