Please help what is the correct etiquette if you have to leave a meeting ? Should apologies be made or should you sneak out? 5 people from the one department were leaving at once

you should speak to the chair person before the meeting starts, and they will decide how to habdle it

You definately shouldn't just sneak out - to people who didn't know you were leaving, that would just look rude, as though you weren't interested.

i would suggest waiting for break in the converstion and apologise that you must go - i think it would look immature or rude if you just sneak out

Thanks everyone. Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks it is basic manners to excuse oneself, at an appropriate point in the meeting of course.

It's normal practice to catch the Chair before the start of the meeting and simply say that you have a prior diary appointment at X, and that you will leave at an appropriate point in the meeting. That way, if he/she wants to collar you about something, he/she can do it when you are there!
