Verbal References - Possible Misleading Information

Hi,

I have recently been made redundant following my former employer ceasing trading, I was employed there for over 2 years. There was a possible opportunity within the same industry and a company was very interested in employing me, however, I have discovered through the grapevine that an alternative employee with less experience and knowledge than me has been offered the position. (which I felt quite upset about). However, I have now gone on to apply for alternative employment, but it appears that this otehr employee at my former company -(who was 'righthand man' to the boss) may be giving bad verbal references to prospective employers and therefore reducing my prospects of further employment. Is this practice allowed, and what would my rights be in respect of this? I feel angered as I have now missed out on 2 very good opportunities.
