if i hand in my notice, Should I be, by LAw, paid on my termination date (17th) or can my employer pay me at the end of the month?

I left work on December 16th 2005. my employer has still not paid my final salary and has only just sent a P45, hope your employer is better
Most employers pay on the last working day of the month, so if you finished on the 17th normally I would not expect you to be paid until month-end. Your P45 should follow quickly afterwards (chase them if you haven't received it within 2 weeks of the month end) as most new employers will want it so they know how much tax to start deducting.
