SRA reading laboratory
were you a primary school pupil in the 60's and did you have an SRA 'lab' in your class? I was expaining what this was to my little grandson the other day, and it suddenly came flooding back to me just how much I used to love using it.
The 'lab' was actually an enormous box file, with hundreds of reading cards, each graded by colours such as tan, orange, aquamarine, gold and silver etc. It was an import from the USA and such a change from the boring old reading books we got here.
My grandson had just been to visit Scotland St school museum, and having dressed up and experienced a victorian class with lessons, felt he had to commiserate about 'how awful' it must have been for me!
Had the technology been available the lab cards would have been an image on a screen like todays aids, but in effect they amounted to virtually the same thing. Not such dark days after all!
