my daughter had the same problem when she was 14. desperate for work but v hard to find. 16 is the legal age limit but there are jobs out there, especially for boys, at 14. has he tried garden centres, not the bigger ones, but smaller ones, washing up in restaurants, obviously paper boy, seasonal work is easier to find, especially on local farms.

good luck and p.s. now she is 16 and can get a job, she's too lazy to find one!!!!!!

I had a job in a cafe at 14, not sure if it was legal and I just got 20 out the till at the end of my shift!

Oooh poglet my eldest girl is 16 next week,i know EXACTLY what you mean,,,,yeah we found out the age is 13 apparently but no mention of wage, don't know if this is because its up to the employer or just not on the gov site!!Thanx for replies!!

Thanx shammy but i cant get into the link,i'll try again later!!

In that case, this is what it says:

Q. What is the minimum age of employment?
A. A child may work part-time at the age of 13, but only take jobs that are classified as 'light work' and on an occasional basis. The definition of light work varies from local authority to local authority depending on local byelaws.

A child under 13 years of age may not be employed at all (although they may be able to take part in performances, sports and modelling where a payment is made for the child's participation) Before a child can take part in such performance the employer will have to apply for a licence to the local authority.

Cheers!
Not usually Saturdays, but he is old enough to do a local paper delivery round.

He's,,,how can i put it,,,not really a paper round type boy,he wants something more,,educational,cant explain it but he's 14 going on 28,if u know what i mean????

you can get a job from the age of 13. i employed someone who started 2 weeks prior to her 14th birthday and currently have a 15 year old member of staff. ive always been impressed that some teenagers are actually keen to work! its completely legal but at that age they cant operate machinery or dangerous equipment, handle food etc. there's no minimum wage requirement so some companies may try to exploit his eager nature! i worked in a newsagents from the age of 14 so that could be an option. other than that it'll probably be doing light work in a cafe (dishes, waiting tables etc). larger chains in city centres would probably be less likely to take on at this age so stick to smaller, local or family run businesses.

its prob worth emailing your local government office to ask if there are any forms that need to be filled out too, this varies from county to county and although we didnt need to do this for our staff, we did need to contact their school to explain what theyd be doing, what hours etc

Hi there,

I was exactly the same at 14, however I only had to wait afew months until I managed to get a job in a restaurant kitchen at 15. Ok I'm still 15 but I am still in the job. This website really helped me when I was looking for a job:

http://www.connexions-direct.com/index.cfm?go=Work

Also, does he know what he wants to do as a future career? Maybe he could find a job in that kind of area, Ok, so he might just be fetching teas for the other employees and not paid alot. But this is a fantastic thing to put on a future CV! It's all about the CV!

Good Luck!
