sick pay -private company

a freind of mine works at a large UK/ international private company and gets only 8 days company sick pay a year, wheras another who works for the local council gets 6 months full pay - are private companies allowed to give employees such poor sick pay entitlement?

Some companies give no sick pay whatsoever, except for the statutory sick pay from the state.

It depends on the terms and conditions of the contract.

A company is not required to pay anything above the statutory minimum (which is about �90 a week).

Statutory sick pay is currently �70.05

The do not have to pay anything at all, most do but they don't have to. ssp is paid by the state.

It is paid by the state but is processed by the employer and then claimed back.

Also it's a maximum of �70.05 if you earn less than that a week you only get the minimum of the two.

Just wanted to clarify that so people don't start to worry they have to fill about forms etc.
