Someone i know has been asked to do one of these and he thinks they are silly! He says "why dont they just ask me for a proper interview".

I disagree I dont see that they differ that much in what the employer can gain from someone. Aside from the benifit to the employee that they dont have to travel to the workplace location what other benifits are there?

A person will not be judged on their looks or size, it will be by written application and telephone answers.

I think this could be a fairer system - although it is harder to 'stall for time' when interviewed by telephone.

The benefit for both parties is that it acts like an aural paper sift - the employer can tell quite a lot from a phone interview, and then invite the aproved canditates in for a facec-to-face. If someone on the phone is obviously unsuitable, then minimum time and effort is wasted on both sides.

Yes, i've had one of these before, and it is basically the same. It may be easier to hide nerves, but maybe puts you at a disadvantage if you're not particularly atriculate.

Phone interviews are especially useful when the job you're applying for is in telecommunications or secretarial work because obv u have to be good on the phone for these anyway.

I once worked in a call centre, and a telephone interview was a standard part of the recruitment process. It's a good way of assessing a candidate's telephone manner and their response to 'awkward' questions.

It was nowhere near as daunting as it sounds. In fact, I seem to recall it was about ten in the morning and I was still wearing my jimjams.
