art history - abstract art
5 Answers
Does anyone know of the best art history websites? i've tried artcyclopedia but its pretty lame. Also tried putting art history in google, but the sites aren't impressive either. Just looked up Picasso in Abstract Art in the above and he isn't even mentioned.... I know that Abstract Expressionism was a term used for the American artists in the 40's and 50's but what about Kandinsky, Picasso and others like them? Surely they were Abstract?!!
Is Abstract Art different from Abstract Expressionism as I can't seem to find it in my books on Movements and Art History in the 20th Century!
Many thanks in advance! X

is quite good.
According to the Oxford Dictionary of Art, abstract art covers everything (and I'm paraphrasing a bit, it doesn't half go on ;0)) that's not representational, whereas abstract expressionism is a c1950 term used to describe a particular movement which began in New York in the 1940s.
