My parents want me to get a job...

I'm going to be 14 in August and my parents say i have to get a Saturday job because it will be experience and will help me later in life but i have hardly any time as it is and with my GCSE's coming up next year i really don't think i'll have time for a job. Also i am quite shy when i'm around some adults and the kind of job my mum is thinking of is in a shop of some kind. It's not that i don't want a job but i don't think i'm ready for that kind of responsibility. Does anyone have any advice they can give me?

Hi, I understand complete what you are saying. However, your parents may realise you are shy and think that they are doing the right thing by getting you stuck in, so to speak.
It's difficult being a teenager (I do just about remember it myself), but if you want to be in the world of adults then you need to get in there at some point. Why don't you ask your parents if you can leave it until after the summer holidays, in the meantime looking for something you would rather do than work in a shop on Saturday. When you are young, going in at the deep end with something like this, is something you will be able to handle much easier than if you were older, young people accept change much easier than older people. Also with regards to responsibility, your age will excuse you quite a bit from any responsibility and you should be shown the job and shadow someone for a while until you get the hang of it.
It will definitely stand you in good stead for the future, if only for enhancing or developing your people skills, but you need to choose your working environment carefully if you are shy. Hope this helps and good luck. And think of all the things you can buy for yourself when you get paid!!

at 14 you will be given very little real responsibilty - i doubt you will be expected to work the till or order stock etc
i also think there are legal issues with what you are allowed to do, you will not be allowed to be left alone.
i would say you will be stocking shelves, tidying, packing bags, pricing etc
why not volunteer at the library? tidying shelves, putting books back, sorting posters leafletsetc - when you get a quite period you can go on the computers or look at the books for your studies
or a playgroup?

Just explain to your parents that you don't want a job right at this very moment. I'm sure they'd understand, but more than that, they can't actually force you to get a job.

How about volunteering two to four hours a week at your nearest charity shop? You won't get paid, but it might be of great benefit for a few weeks at least.
I'm sure the shop would be pleased to have your assistance on Saturdays.
