Can someone enlighten me as to what you call the small words in a sentance?!

i.e. and, to, with, for, am, I, is, at and the like?

A work colleague was asked to make all her words on a piece of work all Initial Caps, except for the "small words"... there is a name for this!

i think when i did german at school the teacher said words like that are "auxillary verbs" i think, though that might only be when you are learning a language.

There is not a single word that I know of to describe all those you mention.

� �to�, �at�, �with� and �for� are prepositions.

� �am� is the first person singular present indicative of the verb �to be�

� �is� is the third person singular present indicative of the verb �to be�

� �I� is the first person singular pronoun

Yes, there is a name for anyone asking for all except the �small words� to start with a capital letter. It�s called �Silly Billy�.

Actually a colleage has returned from holiday and has informed us that she calls them Joining Words. She is a graphic designer and controls all our company brochures, flyers, datasheets etc....

maybe its just generic with that sort of industry, not the English language per se!
