Carpentry and Plastering

I'm thinking about learning some practical, useful skills and am interested in carpentry and plastering. I have no prior experience in these two areas so does anyone have any pointers about where to learn, where not to learn or which colleges or establishments it's best to go to? (particularly in the North West)
