Sick Pay For Self-Employed

Does anyone know if my sister's hubby will be entitled to any sick pay from the government. He has been a self-employed joiner for 20 years and has hardly had any time off in those years, so has stood the cost of his illness himself. However, he needs a major operation soon and will be off work for around three months. Do you know if he will be able to claim anything from anywhere ? Obviously he's paid all his dues and demands continually, but does not have insurance as it was far too expensive to keep up with. Thanks in anticipation.

Yes he can claim income support if nothing else and that will be means tested.

as long as he is up to date with his Class 2 contributions as well as his class 4 contributions with no gaps for the qualifying year, which is april 04- april 05 I think he is fine, if he had any periods of incapacity in the last 3 years where he didn't pay class 2 and was given credits for stamps only he may have trouble.
