iv noticed that theres loads of african security guards ,who can quite frankly hardly speak english in most cases!! and polish too .but ive seen adverts in papers for security guards saying they must have a 10 year checkable work history .but how can they when theyve only been in this country for next to no time

Perhaps they have done this work before and have checkable references from their previous jobs in their own country!!!

How do you know they can hardly speak English? Can't say I often speak to security guards

There are different classes of security guards. The lovely Nigerian guards at my club are restricted to car park and outside work.

They are not allowed to access computer records, or hotel rooms. They do not handle cash or credit cards.

They do act as 'bouncers' for the in-hotel pub.

They are always smiling and courteous to me. Very helpful chaps.

Don`t be put off by the above negative comments. The security business is notorious for paying very low wages and taking on all and sundry. I fully endorse your comments because I have made a point of speking to these ladies and gentlemen. I am not saying that any of them are dishonest, but on the basis of not needing to speak English (how many hughnies are there?) that is no deterrent. As for checking foreign references - I think mosesq is in cloud-cuckoo-land.

none of you have answered my question!!! i work on warehousing and have to speak to security guards when first entering a site and most of times they dont understand me !!! hence im thinking how did they get the job if you need a checkable history

Ah ok I was picturing shop security guards from your question.

Most security staff are employed by agencies. Some will ask for checkable work histories but then not bother checking, meaning they end up employing possibly illegal people, but can pay them less. Simple.

I do not live in cloud cuckoo land I live in an area with a lot of Polish people and a lot of them are over qualified for their jobs but are over here to make money. A lot of them share flats to save money to eventually take home and generally be better off the same way we have ex-pats abroad. Not to sure about the africans. Don't assume that they cannot speak english that they are not responsible. If that was the case what does that make the British working abroad as very few of us can speak another language. This is the EU we can work wherever we want, get over it !!!!!

Captainkirky u really need to have a reality check!
Does knowing if these workers have a 10 year chekable work history make any difference? At the end of the day this is an opportunity for them. Even though it maybe a low-income job these workers deserve to earn a living like anybody else in this country. Why don't u be a better example and communicate more even if they have trouble understanding u. They will learn English sooner or later & may thank u for it.
