Formative Assessment

Dear all,
in my first year of university studying english language and literature.
my first deadline is on thursday for Language and i need to write a 'formative assessment'...i have no idea what this is! help!

Anyway, why dont you ask your lcturer - thats what they are there for.

In my opinion, a formative essay as opposed to a summative essay is one that is marked, but just to give you an idea how you are doing ... it wont count toward your final mark

bednobs is right, there are two kinds of assessment: formative and summative. Only summative contributes to your final, end-of-year, mark. These are things like exams, assessed essays etc. Formative is just to see how you're getting on, to check you understand etc. Don't worry about it too much.
