Being kept in after hours..
Where i work we have to tidy up after customers since its a clothes shop, but because usually its a right tip we dont get out on time.. and guess what? we dont get paid for it.. but my question is, is it not illegal or something to keep us from leaving if we're not being paid for it? i asked someone else who works there and they said that the manager had told them that it was on our contracts that they could keep us there for up to half an hour before they had to pay us, but the thing is no-one remembers reading this anywhere, also we usually get out just before half an hour and also we would only get paid if we were in until 7:30 (we should finish at 6:30) because we only get paid for half an hour but if we're contracted to stay unpaid for half an hour after then we'd have to work till then..
i hope this makes sense. basically it annoys me because we always have to stay behind to tidy but we're not getting paid for it!!

I used to work on the docks and due to the nature of our work we were often kept behind upto an hour or 2 afterwards and never EVER had proper lunch hours, because the boss thought it looked if we stayed and didn't ask for the pay. Whenver we did ask pay he would always say 'If we have money problems, just to talk to him'. So in the end I left and told him on the phone just what I thought about the job.
I used to be contracted to work 9-6.00 pm. The store closed at 5.30 pm, but as you know there are always shoppers who lag behind and are there right up until 5.45 pm & beyond!
As I was the manager, I decided to start the proper tidying at 5.15 pm ~ although I was quite a little Hitler with regards to trying to keep the store tidy all day so that it wasn't so bad later on..not always successful I must add!
Anyway, the store was usually tidy by 6.00 pm and I would let the staff go by then. I then had to cash up which would take anything from 15 minutes to 30..depending on any discrepancies I had to sort out. I was usually out of the store by 6.20-30 pm which I was never paid for. Considering this was every day, it soon added up. No doubt the company owed me thousands by the time I packed up retail ;o)
