To the best of my knowledge the dealer is entitled to keep your deposit - but try explaining the situation to him and appeal to his better nature ( if he has one ).
Was it cash or card ?
No automatic rights to cancel, although you can cancel the deal and negotiate getting some or all deposit back. Garage only entitled to keep reasonable amount of it for expenses/inconvenience, so if is quite a large amount they don't have the right to automatically keep it all, just because you cancel the sale.

If you signed any finance agreements this would be a bit different.
I would have thought that the garage could insist on the sale going through - ie that you take the van and pay the balance. You made a contract - you keep it.

However enforcing this will probably cost them more than it gains them so it's unlikely.

Does the invoice have any T&C? It would be worth checking what they say.

If not, as previous posters have suggested.
