Emailing graphic design work

Hi. I am just applying for graphic design jobs by email and need to email work samples. I was wondering what best format it is to send work. Before I've sent PDFs and JPEGs. I was going to send JPEGs now as they compress the files more. Is this an acceptable format to send? Also I need to send my CV. Should I send this as PDF or JPEG. I know they'd be able to open both so I'm guessing it shouldn't really matter. I was just wondering what format they expect and what people usually use.

gloop - I'd expect to receive a CV in Word or as a pdf. Make sure its laid out properly and that you use standard fonts (or embed them) or your CV might look strange. If you use a PC consider that your CV may be read on a Mac in a design company. I wouldn't expect to receive a CV as an image.

For your samples, pdf is fine. My concern with compressed jpegs would be that the samples wont look as good as they could. Your samples should be as good and as 'clean' as you can get them. I shouldn't worry too much about file size as a design company should be used to dealing with large attachments.

I'm a freelance graphic designer and send .pdfs of my work via email... .jpgs can be a problem due to resolution and file size (which will be low/small for speed of emailing): if someone wants to 'zoom in' to look at a graphic detail: some typography, a logo or a detail of a page layout for example, it will look pixelated... not only will this display your work poorly, it will also show your 'lack of knowledge' about image resolution generally... not a good thing for a possible employer! What about creating your own website that you can provide the link/url for?

And as cas has said, embed the fonts in your .pdfs otherwise they will 'revert' to a standard nasty like Courier... yuk!

Thanks for your replies. I've saved the cv as a PDF. How do I embed the fonts? I've done it before but can't remember When I save my images as PDFs though the file size is really big wheras if I save as JPEGs they're smaller. They are high quality JPEGs and the resolution looks ok on my computer. Is this ok do you think? I want to avoid sending a really a really big email.

I am about the set up a website but I'm having to get help off a friend as I've never done one before. I've been meaning to set one up for ages!

Fonts are embeded in a pdf anyway. If you want to be super sure it will work, you can outline all of the fonts but shouldn't be any need for this. I would always recomend sending pdfs and not jpgs
