Can my employer stop me from doing an NVQ at work. In theri values it says they support learning within the company and they are not having to pay for any of the NVQ. Also I am not being taken away from my work because I am observed actually working. But now someone says that the Admin course is not recognised and my assessor might not be able to finish the course. Is this right?

Hi there. I really think this does come down to their contract agreement. So you'll need to check that.

Any courses outside of work paid for by you don't have any detrimental effect on your job, but it you are studying for this during working hours, regardless of who pays for if it doesn't affect your actual job, your employer gets to have the last say because it's on THEIR time.

What is the course you are actually doing? There may be a way out of this predicament but I'd like to know more in order to help you.
I reckon they could stop you, yes! After all, "they" are "the Boss" and YOU are "The Employee". And, if they absolutely can't Legally stop you, they will find a way to rid themselves of you.......Bottom Line - They Win.
They may object to the observer coming in to observe you, could that be the problem?

Is there a head office that you can appeal to?

Try to sell it to the company so that they see it as in their interest eg It will take two years to complete I will be a dedicated employee whilst studying...

Try to get the NVQ exam body onside or interested Do they have an investors in people award.

I cant understand why they would not support you, perhaps they are jealous for your desires to better yourself.

Good luck and best wishes
