My daughter wanted an admin position at a local asda that is opening soon but instead got offered a position in the entertainment dept, does anyone know what sort of work this will involve? She has a HND in Admin so do you think that there may be a chance of promotion after a while, I heard that Asda are good at helping you get promotion etc as she doesnt want to be stuck in entertainment forever, anyone know if this is true? Thanks.

She needs to ask them what kind of work it will involve, it could be anything.

There is always a chance of promotion if you are good at your job, people with no qualifications whatsoever have ended up running Companies that they started working in as a junior!

Also, at least she would have a foot in the door and would be able to apply for vacanices in other departments and/or stores that are usually advertised internally.
This "sounds" like working in Asda's music & dvd sections...or they could be asking her to "manage" the area. She has a HND and companies like Asda place people on their management trainee programmes with these qualifications.. However, she should ask to see the role profile ( a company such as Asda must have one) for the position. Also if she accepts she will be given a contract setting out her terms and conditions which she should check carefully before signing. Like cheekychops..this could be the foot in the door to greater things. Good luck.
or maybe entertainment dept means dressing up like a chicken and handing out leaflets?
it is reasonable for her toask what her duties will involv before deciding on whether to take the job or not, so get her to ask them

Thanks for the answers. The store isnt open until September but she has to go for training soon, she is unsure of wheter she will like it or not but hopefully she will.
Chances are she'll be selling CDs and hi-fi equipment. Asda had vacancies to fill and all they want is someone with a modicum of intelligence to fill them. As someone who once worked in a supermarket and then made my way into admin work, I can tell her now, it won't happen internally. My company offered training, and I have retail qualifications to prove it, but those of us on the shop floor, so to speak, never had grabs at the admin vacancies. I had to look elsewhere to get that sort of work.

Think about it. The lass works hard to get a qualification in Admin, then goes across to retail. She will most likely be asked, if she gets an interview, why she's spent the last x number of months NOT working in admin (and there is a lot of admin work around, believe me).

She'd be far better off going to a decent temp agency, if admin work is what she really wants.

While she was at her interview the woman said that there will be chances to get promotion and maybe get into the admin side, she said that Asda are very good at this but she was proberly talking rubbish. My daughter has tried for various admin jobs but these are either already taking due to someone knowing someone or else they are looking for x number of years experience which unfortunately she cant get. We live in a small town and sadly admin jobs dont come up very often and even in the bigger towns these are generally earmarked for someone.
