Im a second year graphic design degree student currently designing a website for showing my portfolio... my question is: would it be better to be simple and direct by putting my work on the first page - or would it be a good idea to show off my internet design capabilities...with flashy sites that need navigating - interesting and quirky, but not so direct?

The second option, if you have time, would certainly be more impressive. A guy in my year at art college did this for his final project. He got a 2/1 in the end. Yes, design a web page that has navigable sites and go for it.
The people who look at it may not have time to navigate the whole site. Maybe you should try a combination: a bit of your work on the first page will give them an idea but give them the opportunity to look at your fancy web skills too if they want to.
