Redundancy and how it was done?

Hi Recently my employer decided to come into our workplace and without any word of warning took myself (the manager) and my assistant manager to one side. He then informed my assistant manager that she was being made redundant, it was done in such a cold thoughtless way that it was a complete shock. We are a small retail shop and he wants to save money, my question is as follows 1, Should he have informed me as Im the manager of his actions before he did this? 2, This means there will only be one member of paid staff in the shop, no cover for lunch or breaks, is this legal? Thanks

If it is a shoe shop, that definitely legal. I manage MY shop single-handed from 6a.m. in the morning till 10p.m. at night seven days a week (only open 6hours on Sunday but I use the rest of the time polishing shoes). I have been doing this for 45 years, and do I get a word of thanks - NO I DON`T. When I can fit them in I have to do all the repairs so I am cobbling a lot of the time. NO you perverts, cobbling not gobbling. And then my employer comes in seven times a day to have his shoes polished, AND he rests them on my knee when I do it!.
Actually lone working if you are employed is illegal... and you are entitled to by law a 20 minute break for working six hours as a minimum .. More if under 18

Its not illegal to work alone in a shop. See here. If it were me, I would lock the door and put a 'back in 1/2 hour' sign on the door when I wanted my lunch! Breaks are allowed by law and if you are on your own, I can't see any other way.
