I have just taken on a promotion at work - the girl who has been taken on to do my old job is incredibly lazy and rarely does her work no matter how many times u ask, if she does, she seems to make a point of doing it badly!!!

this has left me in a position where i have to cope with my old and new responsibilities together...

my main problem is that this is a small family run business and she is a friend of the bosses family!!!

can anyone offer any suggestions on how i can resolve this???

Unfortunately, employing friends or family rarely works - though this isnt your fault.

It depends on your remit and responsibilities. Are you actually in charge of her? If so, then you either speak to her directly or go to your boss and tell him/her the situation.

Not an easy situation, but you need to do something. I think I'd go to your boss and say something along the lines of 'I know X is your friend, but there seems to be a bit of a problem, hence my bringing it to your attention first, blah blah blah'

Try coaching her and at the same time ensuring that she has had all the training she needs to do the job.
