I think you can go back to the same company but under a different work title..?
I'm sure you can't go back withina year if you got tax free redundancy payment. Look on HMRC site under redundancy terms
You can go back, but as the company has given you a tax free redundancy payment, if they take you back in the same role, both you and your employer would have a tax liability on the redundancy payment as if it was earned income. However, i believe the limit on that is 6 months. But you will find that there is always a way round that - they can employ you on a temporary contract in some capacity i.e. a slightly altered role, until the 6 months expires and then you can be re-employed with hopefully no tax liability on any side.
If you go back to the same company you will have lost your continuous service. I am almost certain there would be no tax liability on the redundancy payment as it is compensation for the loss of your rights and you don't regain those. I have known staff be re-engaged 1 month after redundancy without a problem. Role doesn't have to be different, it could be that the company received wrong financial information and made a mistake.
