I'm planning a trip to LA and I can't figure out where I should stay. Please help me

My friends and I are going to LA for 5 days/4 nights. For 2 nights our hotel is being paid for in Santa Monica. The hotel is very expensive so we are moving for the last 2 nights so we plan to stay in the city. However, I can't figure out what area (specifically) would be best. I want the opportunity to explore the different neighborhoods, as I'm thinking of moving out there. But we have limited time and we are not going to have a car. I'm willing to utilize public transportation, but I just want to stay in an area that's convenient to nice living areas, as well as shopping, nightlife and good food. Can anyone help me by suggesting a good area, street name or hotel? I appreciate any suggestions! Thanks
