My 15 year old has just finished a work experience placement through his school and has been offered a job during the summer holidays. Two questions - how does he get an NI number, and how many hours a week is he legally allowed to work.

Don't think he can have an NI number if he is 15 - it would normally arrive automaticaly just before he is 16

Thanks very much for your answers.
Yir son will have what is called a Child Reference Number (CRN) which is allocated when Child Benefit is claimed. Three months prior to a child's sixteenth birthday, that child's CRN becomes its National Insurance (NI) Number and HM Revenue & Customs issue a plastic card showing the NI Number.
No National Insurance is payable by under-16s, so he won't need an NI number (and it will usually be issued automatically anyway at the appropriate time).

Most under-16s don't earn enough to breach the earnings threshold, but as he is working in the holidays, he might. Nevertheless, he won't have to pay NI (although he would have to pay Income Tax in the unlikely event his annual earnings exceeded 5439).

If the company does not have experience of employing under-16s, you may have to ask them to call HMRC to seek clarification, as they will likely be used to insisting onn an NI number as a matter of course.
