I have currently been in a contract position for over a year and I have all of my hours in to receive my full one year maternity leave. I have been told that I most likely will not have a job to come back to...I have also heard that if you return to a different job after your maternity leave is over that you have to pay back the money that you received while you were on your maternity leave...is this true?

dont know how the system works in the UK what do you mean no job to come back to are they firing you as thats discrimination
You must receive at least the amount that is offered by Statutory Maternity Pay. That money is 'non-refundable'.

However, your employer may have a scheme which pays more than the statutory amount. Some such schemes require you to refund some of the money if you don't return to work but the amount you have repay must still leave you with at least the same amount that you'd have got if you'd received Statutory Maternity Pay.
