HGV medicals

First of all not sure if i have the right topic forum. I would like to go for my HGV class one license, however i have type 2 diabetes and diagnosed sleep apnoea, does anyone know if these will stop me from going for the license?, bearing in mind it is cotrolled via medication,diet and regular exercise.

The diabetes shouldn't be a problem, but unsure about the sleep apnoea. I know someone who has cataplepsy and takes medication to control it, but his doctor won't sign for him as OK to drive - full stop. Perhaps it depends on the severity of the condition, and whether you have a driving licence to begin with. Have a word with your doctor, and I'm sure they'll give you some straight answers. Diabetes is something which can be an issue for anyone applying for an HGV licence.

Thanks for that info Debs. Interesting, because I have a relative who's insulin dependent, but she's allowed to drive her car. Tbh, I would've thought that would've applied to all vehicles - but with hindsight, long distance trucking could be another matter.

You are correct - being in charge of a 40 Tonne truck is somewhat more "demanding" - therefore, the medical requirements are a lot more stringent.
