How do I get a CRB?
I thought it was up to agencies/companies themselves to do it for you but many of the jobs I've seen advertised say you must have a valid CRB...

Hi Eash, Getting a CRB takes time and you often cannot start a job, as a carer or where works involve the vulnerable, without one. So even if you are offered and accept the job it can be weeks (months) before you can start. Getting the CBR done in advance, if you are going for this type of job saves that time.

As I thought it seems you can't obtain a CRB yourself and either a company or agency has to do it for you which doesn't make any sense as the jobs I've seen listed all request you have a valid CRB check so it's like a catch 22 really... How stupid.

i got my CRB check through a recruitment agency, they charged me �50 for this and i had it back in about 6 weeks.

You can't get a CRB check on yourself.

However, you can effectively do the same thing (for most purposes) by getting hold of a copy of your police record. (Many employers will accept this in place of a CRB check, although they might still require you to allow them to apply for a 'proper' CRB check once you start employment).

To obtain a copy of the data, which the police have about you, you simply need to write to your local police force, provide proof of identity and pay a fee of �10. The police must provide the data (or a document stating that no data is held) within 40 days. Your local police force's website probably has further information but the procedure is a standard one, so this might help:

the same in scotland, its called an enhanced disclosure certificate, you cant apply for it yourself but a third party (ie an employer) can request it on your behalf as they would have a legitmate interest in the information it holds.
