If you're in the UK you should follow the ACAS guidelines for redundancy and draw up selection criteria.  Any other method could find you in ET

That's a big question because the advantages and disadvantages will depend on so many things. You have to look at inventory carrying cost. Inventory spa ce. Your Supply chain your shipping capabilities your inventory control...Wow! you need a text book for this one.
