CRB check
4 Answers
After some advice please. My CRB that I had done in 2006 is 100%. Unfortunately in 2007 I got in a scuffle with a women and even though it was not my fault I received a caution. I told my boss and she was ok because she knows it is out of character for me. Unfortunately the school I work in is amalgamating and as a result my job will be made redundant. As far as I am aware there is no evidence that this is to do with my caution. The question is alot of jobs I am applying for in offices require CRB checks. Am I wasting my time applying because of my caution. I do know a caution is NOT a conviction, more like a slap on the wrist. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Don't try to hide it, just get on and apply for the jobs. You presumably have a positve reference from your last boss. Also, is it going to be 'spent' soon? If two years have elapsed and you've not been in trouble, I think this will not then be live on the police database.
Look carefully at the wording of the form you fill out when applying, and if it only asks for convictions, then just keep shtumm about the caution. However if it asks about cautions don't lie on the form.

To work in a school you must have an enhanced CRB which will show a caution. To have received the caution you must have admitted the offence so it would be better to mention in your letter of application that the caution exists and why you have it. If there are other candidates with clean CRB checks you may struggle to get a redeployed post.
My daughter had the same problem, for the same reason as you.
She works for social services, she didn`t put it on the form at the last check, but it came up and she was told she should have mentioned it.
She`s had the job for about 15 years, she managed to keep her job, but is worried about applying for other jobs.
The caution was much longer back than two years.

Since 2006 the minimum timescale an adult caution can remain live (i.e. visible to a Standard Disclosure CRB check and/or Enhanced Disclosure) is 5 years. When the caution is stepped-down (this occurs if the subject comes to no further notice by the police over a period of time determined by the type of offence) it then drops off a Standard Disclosure but will appear to the operative processing an Enhanced Disclosure check. It will only be included on the Enhanced Disclosure if the offence is deemed relevant by the police.
