My niece is thinking about a career in hairdressing,how are they paid, is it just a weekly wage or paid by how many clients they have?

(A lot of salons, which appear to be a single business, are actually several one-person businesses operating under the same roof). So every penny paid by their clients initially goes into the hairdressers' pockets but, of course, they have to pay their rent out of that money.
