My cousin who is 17 years old has just left home after a argument with his father, and not the usual teenage tiff either. He has been living with his Grandmother, but she has made is clear that this is only until he finds his own place to stay. He has no job, and is currently completing a full-time college course but does not receive a bursary or loan, as his father was deemed to earn too much for him to qualify. I would be grateful for any advice anyone would be able to give on if he would be able to receive a bursary/loan, or if he would qualify for any other kinds of benefits? Thank you for any help anyone can supply.
Whoever still gets his child benefit, payable til he is 19, can claim working family tax credit for him or if his grandmother is on pension tax credit she may be able to add him. Someone is getting his child benefit though if he is enrolled at cllege full time,.so whoever that is should be making sure they claim for him.
Yes, his father has told them that he has left home, and they are cancelling the claim. The job centre has given him an application for income support, but it the question asked in it do not seem appropriate for his situation.
He should fill the form in anyway and add his exact circumstances in the additional info bit. He is not actively seeking employment and also JSA is not payable to under 18s anyway. He needs to see his College Student support dept.
