I have an interview this week and email says please bring along good quality copies of your passport cover and the detailed identification page.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.if they are asking for the cover then they mean the cover (for UK citizens, this is maroon). Take it, if you don't then they will think you have not read the email or paid attention to the detai.
If I were you I would copy the cover and the page with all your details on, then take the original passport and the photocopies with you to the interview. When we interview we have to sign to say we have seen the original, but keep the copies which will go on your personnel file if (when!) you get the job. As jb says, most employers keep data for equality & diversity records so they will need to see the cover to clarify which country issued it.

It is the legal duty of any employer in this countyr to hold certified proof that anyone working for them has the legal right to work in the UK, the most common ID for this is a valid UK passport. I take photocopies of staff passports whenever they start with the company and always ask at interview if they can provide the id needed. Anyone from the EU can legally work in the UK and so the ID page, being pretty standard throughout the EU, needs to have the cover page with it to confirm the nationality of the passport holder,
