crb and telling employer before they see the cert?
27 Answers
i have to send a copy of my crb to an employer.
the only thing on it is the fact that in 2003 i was drunk and walking home from a party...i tripped over some binbags and they saw it and decided to gelp me home - i had done nothing wrong - i refused to let them inside my house to see me to me to bed so they decided i was a 'unsafe' to go up 3 flights of stairs alone and took me to the station for a few hours
this now appears (unfairly i think, as i was not arrested or accused of doing anything wrong, an i fell because of the binbags not because i was too drunk to walk...but anyway...) on my crb check as drunk on the highway
should i inform the person i am sending it to what is on it, or say nothing and let them see it for themselves?
should i explain the incident?
(i am trying to get it removed as i feel it is unfair and kind of implies i was drunk and acting like a maniac and causing trouble...at least i think some might assume that - and i dont want her to think i am a drinker)
the job will be working with children - but not caring for them or in charge - (facepainting)
thanks

I've lost count of the times I've fell over drunk and sober. And as it says 'drunk on the highway' which just means drunk in the street...drunk people still need to get home.
sandy - because i was taken to the station...i suppose they had to log it
...i am angry its even there myself because nothing even happened...at the time i rememeber just chatting away in the car with them, assumed i would have to just sit somewhere like an office for a few hours til they thought i was ok, so i didnt complain about going with them...but they put me in the cells in a jumpsuit! now it sounds like like i have done some thing wrong!
they also claim to have taken prints and a photo - which is nonsense...none were taken...perhaps they wanted to justify wasting mine and their time
as i say i am complaining to get it removed.

Just hand it in , I'm sure it'll be fine. Being drunk once 8 years ago doesn't stop you from being OK around children for facepainting.
They should be trying to protect children from real wrong 'uns rather than people with the odd civil offence.
If they ask you about it you can explain then, but best not draw attention ot it.

Is the employer making you fill out an application form? I would say that if you are given the chance to disclose the info before you send a CRB, you should disclose it. But if the first thing they will see is the CRB then probably no point drawing attention to it as others say. Strictly speaking the employer should probably make you get a new CRB rather than using an old one but if it's for a day's supervised facepainting then I can see why they wouldn't!

Maidup, where can you get a CRB online? To my knowledge people cannot apply for their own, you need to go through a company. Ratter as I said most employers want to do their own but it certainly does happen that smaller voluntary groups etc will accept previous CRBs that are less than a year old. Whether they should or not is a different matter but for a one-off supervised position why would they wait several months for a check to come back? System is very flawed.
Really? Wow, that's a massive change. I hadn't heard that they only take a few days, just today there was an article in my local paper about schools taking people on before CRBs are returned because they can take up to six months. When did it all change? Also how can you complete it all online when they need to see so many original ID documents?
The situations outlined by joko and ummmm demonstrate clearly that the necessity to get a CRB check for the most innocuous of occupations or activities is completely fallacious for two reasons.
Firstly, the range of activities to which this need has extended is out of all proportion to the risk the checks are supposed to address. There are many examples but one that spring to mind immediately are Mrs Annabel Hayter who was told she needed a CRB check in order to continue arranging flowers in Gloucester Cathedral. The ludicrous explanation she was given when she queried the need for the check was that the ladies shared a toilet with the choirboys and there was a possibility that paedophiles could infiltrate the flower arrangers. Mrs Hayter refused to co-operate with this ridiculous imposition and was promptly dismissed.
The other reason is, as has been demonstrated in earlier answers, "Criminal Records" are no longer what it says on the tin. They are not simply records of criminal convictions but are also records of police activities in which innocent members of the public often inadvertantly become involved. The “nothing to hide so nothing to fear” brigade should bear this in mind. If they’ve nothing to hide (as ummm’s cousin has) then nothing should be recorded and nobody else needs to know about it.

New Judge...you want to know what it said on her CRB? Racially motivated incident...!! The facts are they wanted to talk to her because they wanted to find out information on her (black) boyfriend. He was a wrong 'un (long gone thank goodness) but that stays on her record. She only called a bouncer a 't w a t' after he pushed her.
hi, thanks
yes it in an enhanced one from november 08.
i also have a subject access form that states it too
the position is freelance so she could not get me one, i think she is happy to accept an old one under the circumstances...i am female and also will never be alone with the children and it will be in a public place so probably not so strict.
i have already got the job, this is just formailites really - I doubt she would be bothered by this one thing, though I wondered it if was the 'done thing' to also decare it.
yes i agree its ridiculous the hoohaa we have to go through for these forms...they are necessary of course but really shouldnt be so hard to get
