I recently attended a job interview, didn't get the position which, no worries i wasn't interested in the position but was told by my team leader that i needed to attend the interview, so to keep her happy i went along with the interview which was held by my team leader and another lady above our team leader.

I didn't get the job and was told this face to face but had another surprise and was told they were also taking the current job id been doing for 6 months or so off me and giving it to the other person along with giving her the job that was interviewed for. Is this right what they have done??

I think a lot depends of your terms of employment - what does your contract say?
Looks like time to go for another job interview (but not with your current employer).
so a) what are they leaving you with? and b) how can they give the other person two jobs? It does depend on the terms of your contract, but generally an employer can't radically change someone's role without a period of consultation.

How long have you been employed by your company?
is this local authority? sounds like their crazy way of thinking
Did you ask why you had been asked to attend an interview?
Maybe a restructuring had been announced and staff were being asked to apply for roles in the new structure.
Have they announced what will happen to you? Have you been declared redundant?
Have they tried to match you to other roles or asked you to apply for other roles with your organsiation?
...and if you have been there less than 12 months they can dismiss you (with notice) for almost any reason.

Thanks all for your answers. I work in the NHS as medical secretary to whom I was one to 4 consultants up until the other week. I have now been told to do the job of relief secretary i.e. covering other secretaries when they are on annual leave etc. It is an OK job but the main aim of the medical secretary is to work her way up, which I had done and been given the job of secretary to consultants only to have it taken away. I'm feeling that I was maybe set up in the interview....team leader said that she "needed me to attend the interview" and maybe by me attending the interview I have actually helped my team leader set me up for a fall.

If your role was that of secretary to 4 consultants and now you are a relief?
Something doesn't add up to me at all
Are you in a union? talk to your rep if you are
Are you still working the same hours and days as you were? Have you been asked to work anything over and above or even less than you were before?
So what job were you being interviewed for?
maybe your attitude in the interview made it quite obvious you weren't interested and they just felt that you hadnt taken them or the company or the job seriously enough and therefore weren't suitable for the either role...

Joko....i understand where you are coming from but looking at the whole picture, i am certain that what they have done is not right. pink-kittens has picked up on this as well and she has never met me but simply from what i had briefly said about the situation, she has sensed that something doesnt add up. The latest is that im now off work suffering with shingles, stress and given antidepressants. This is my 4th week on sick. I dont know which way to go with regards to this situation.

Any suggestions or sound advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
