How long can a garage use trade plates on one of their works vans

Depends whether plates are red lettering on white, or white lettering on red which have a very limited permitted use.

They can't.

"It is an offence to . . . use a vehicle, which is permanently in the possession of the trade licensee unless they are a manufacturer and the vehicle is one kept solely for research and development"

Maybe things have changed since my days in the force but I remember a sying we had in relation tp trade plates which was "red on white he's alright, white on red stop him dead"

The garage that I worked at in the 60s the recovery vehicle had trade plates but I can't remember which way round, red or white.
