I have 5 years no claims on my car insurance. Many people might remember all the questions I have posted about my Golf asking advice with things that have gone wrong. Well another thing has gone wrong and its at the garage again. If it costs a lot to fix I am going to scrap the car as it's endless problems. I can't currently afford another car so will use public transport which is fine. My question is, if I stop my insurance until I get another car will I have lost my no-claims discout or is there a record somewhere of it?

You used to be able to get your insurrer to give you written proof of your current amount of NCB which I think was valid for about 3yr but that may have changed.
Obviously your current insurer has a record of your no claims history ( it's a good idea to protect this for a small additional premium ). As long as you reinsure a vehicle within two years from the expiry date of your present policy you shouldn't have a problem.
I'd agree with the others. I sold my car after having my little girl, as we couldn't afford to run two cars on just my husbands salary. When I restarted work, just under two years later, I kept my no claims bonus. It does seem that two years is the cut off point.
