Bonuses generally have to be 'earned'. For example, someone who works on a factory production line might be entitled to a bonus each week, which is dependent upon the productivity rate for that particular line. However (with most employers) staff won't receive any such bonus when they weren't actually present to earn it. (e.g. when they're on holiday or off sick).
Since the driver in your question wasn't sitting in his cab during the relevant period, he wasn't in a position to earn the bonus. So (unless he happens to have an unusually generous employer) I can't see how he could be entitled to the bonus payments.
