A reputable guide claims that credit and debit cards are not widely used in Malta? Can this be so in 2021? We're due to go in four weeks and whilst it wouldn't be too much of a problem to get cash out meals etc. it would be nice to be forearmed. Is there anything else about Malta we should know!!?

In my experience, it’s widely accepted.
That and my best of friends being Maltese and never had an issue!
Always good to have some cash for smaller purchases as they’re charged a fee when using cards…
Hope that helps..
had no trouble when we were there about five years ago.
Cards are accepted in most places you'd expect them to be - hotels, shops, restaurants.
Just like the UK, you need cash for local markets, street vendors and smaller purchases in bars and cafes. There is no Uber in Malta so you will need cash for taxis - don't know whether buses have 'tap and go'.
