Politicians have dithered over this for years.  Is the fact that this government has decided to bite the bullet and go ahead with it a sign they're ready to do what's necessary to prompt economic growth?

they may well be. but they will incur the wrath of "Net Zero" Milliband and Mayor Khan, who are both opposed. Milliband might be persuaded if someone could magic an electric airliner into existence; but Khan is prepared to pursue it through the courts. it'll get tied up in litigation for years and years.

If a third Heathrow runway means more tourists, more money coming into the UK, that can only be a good thing, can it not?

What about all the families and businesses that will have to leave if it goes ahead. I served at the Fire Station that covers the areas of Sipson and Harmondsworth - properties have been there for absolute ages and will be destroyed. I feel for them should this go ahead. And, please, don't mention compensation - no amount of money could make this a soft touch.

If more tourists are required, they don't have to be coming into Heathrow.

The last Labour government approved a third runway 16 years ago. In that time nothing (apart from a few protests and court cases) has happened.

This time will be no different. Even if approval was given tomorrow, it would be at least five years before the first spade went into the ground and another ten before the runway was operational. If Ms Reeves is relying on that project to undo the economic damage her budget produced, she may be out of luck.

The North West runway plan, which is the one that had been eventually settled upon, would take out 761 homes - including all of Langford village, much of Harmondsworth village, a few houses in Sipson and a 'square block' of 1930's houses off Bath Road (Zealand Avenue and Pinglestone Close).

But I don’t hink they need worry too much. This project saw no progress even when the net-zero lunatics were scarcely heard of.

Heathrow desperately needs this for reasons that are too lengthy to go into here. The UK has been losing ground to the Continent because of lack of progress. But I don’t think that will cut any ice.

Having lived in Staines for a number of years, I'm now glad I eventually got away. But if this goes ahead, my sympathies are with those who still live there.

i would expect approval to be forthcoming in about 10 years.

The Lower Thames Crossing, also mentioned today, had a planning application running to 359,866 pages across 2,383 separate documents, making it the longest planning application since the introduction of the 2008 Planning Act. Runway 3 will need to produce something similarly voluminous to ensure the heading off of every possible judicial review......

It's about time it went ahead (even though it will take years)  I know someone who lives in the area that will be taken over by the runway and they were offered market rate +25% for their house.  They couldn't wait to sell up. Uncertainty has been haging over the residents' heads for years. You only have to look at the amount of aircraft in a holding pattern at peak times at Heathrow - going round and round for 30 mins + because they can't land  to realise that isn't good for the environment either.  All that wasted fuel, passengers missing their connections due to holding for ages. There is no point building another airport because people want a transfer hub - they don't want to travel between airports.  It's way overdue.

The planning processes in this country are ludicrous. More than a third of a million pages for a tunnel a couple of miles long?

No wonder nothing ever gets done.

Reeves' "growth" speech was pie in the sky. Talk is cheap - she will have crashed the economy before any of it happens.

And London is experiencing a gold shortage - hm, I wonder how that could have happened🙄

I used the airport about 40 years ago and confess to being surprised about how far away from London it was.

I won't need to trouble it again so don't build on my account.

I think most major airports are distant from the city, both Heathrow and JFK airports are 18 miles from their respective cities.

It needs doing but it wont promote any growth to Robber.

It would help growth normally but we have a government that has turned us from the fastest growing economy in the G7 to round the u bend in 6 months. Reeves and the rest of Tool and the gang are like a herbicide when it comes to growth.

This runway plan will just end up like the Scottish SNP ferries scandal.Years and years late(and one is still halfway through being built)and millions and millions of pounds overbudget.

I see this was being debated 10 years ago and nothing was done(mikey4444),will we still be having this discussion in 2035?
