video ecorder will play video but won't record properly

Video recorder will play videos but when I record something using the timer the image is not clear and and looks like intereference even though it is clear if you look at the TV channel trhough the video and if you record there and then.

clean the tape heads with a tape head cleaner, if that doesn't work/help try using a new tape to record on and see if that cures it. if it's an old machine then it will be cheaper to buy a new one than get it repaired (ussually )
basic videos are on sale for fifty quid or so.
