Hedge against house wall?

I am getting an extension done at the side of my house, which requires me breaking a hedge that runs between my neighbour and myself. Neighbour wants me to plant a new hedge against the new wall when it is completed. Is this a bad idea, i.e., damp problems, roots, etc. Also, does anyone know what the best type of hedge would be to plant in such a spot? - Thanks, Doug

Well it would be better not to plant anything against the wall, as you say it can lead to damp problems etc. whose hedge is it anyway - if it is yours then you are not obliged to replace it if you don't want to. If you do decide to i would go for beech

Thanks for your reply. The hedge is actually half in my garden and half in theirs! Effectively we both own it I suppose.
janetsflower has given you a good answer, but it doesn't matter how much of it is in your neighbours garden, if the hedge is there instead of a fence, check your deeds, if its yours, then you don't have to replace it, of course, if its theirs, then you do, if thats what they want.

Thanks again. Would a Clematis on a trellis attached to the wall give any problems? I think they just want something 'green' on the side of the house, not necessarily a hedge.
Hi doug, why not discussit with them?.
