Being paid for lost time for Hospital Appointments

My boyfriend has 2 lfie long medical conditions, both of which require him to take time off for regular hospital and doctors appointments. He is not paid for the time he is out of work attending these appointments. Is he able to claim this money back and, if so, how does he go about it?
