house number?

Hi, my parents have paid to add an extention to our house for them to live in, they want the same house number as ours but with an `a` next to it, who says if we can or can not have it, they think its the post ffice, but who is it down too o determin this? thanks,

Contact the Planning Department of your Local Authority in the first instance. Either they, or a separate unit in their department, will deal with this.

They will then formally contact the Post Office to explain that the 'a' number is legitimate.

As far as I am aware there will be no cost for this, although you may have to provide a scaled Location Plan (1/200 or 1/500) to indicate the proprty under consideration.

So are you saying that permission comes from the council or the post office?

The Council is the street naming and numbering authority for the area. If they approve the new number they will register the address and contact Royal Mail to amend their postal address database.

It is the Local Authority that determines this as the above says. You will not have a problem getting them to do this PROVIDED the accommodation is separate, in that it is registered as a separate dwelling for Council Tax. My son lives in a flat called XYZ HOUSE ANNEXE, connected to the original XYZ HOUSE. Both are registered and his Annexe is in Property Band A. But the whole house is only one legal title for Land Registry purposes.

Well its an extention that is atatched to our main detached property so not a seperate annex
