Shared Garden Path

I live in a mid terrace. We have a path running through the middle of our garden ( left to right ) that continues through our neighbors gardens. I think it was used in the past for taking the dustbins round to the front gardens as it can be accessed from a side road. My question is, even though its on our deeds etc as a shared path which we maintain, is there any chance of us maybe buying it or claiming it? We have lived there only 3 years and Ive tried searching the net but its not easy to understand. Any info would be appreciated. Ta - Sue

I assume you want to include the path in your garden and prevent neighbours from coming across it. As it is on your deeds as a shared path it is very likely also on your neighbours deeds in the same way. You can check this by getting a copy of their deeds from the land registry online service for a few �s.

If it is on their deeds, you could only claim it or buy it (assuming you can find out who owns it - which may be possible from land registry, but it might not be registered if last sold many years ago) if your neighbours agree and it is then deleted from their deeds.

Thanks themas. I didn't have a clue where to start researching it. The houses on both sides are rented which make it a bit harder to contact the owners but I know they were bought just before ours was. I do want it as part of my own garden to stop the neighbors leaving the gates open and dropping litter etc. I'll check out that website, cheers.
