Can he take me to court?

Can an ex man friend take me to court to get back money that he paid to help me out at a bad time. He did not say it was a loan, we were going to sell my house and move in somewhere else together. He went off with another woman two years ago and has now out of the blue written asking for money back. I don't know if he has proof of paying this money, we had no written or verbal agreement.

Yes, he can. Anybody can issue a summons in the Small Claims' Court.
