After completing a year's maternity cover, the person i have been covering for has decided to resign. The manager is insisting that the job has to be advertised externally. I was always under the impression that jobs had to be advertised but internally was sufficient. She has just brought in a new person (friend of hers) without either internal or external advertising and I fear she wants to bring in another! Does any body know where I stand? thank you

I assume that you have a temporary contract. If so its just that - temporary - and its entirely up to the management to decide how it wants to fill the vacancy. You have no preferential entitlement - unless the company HR policies say something different.
